Managing DNS Servers.; 2 minutes to read; In this article. A DNS Server is a computer that completes the process of name resolution in DNS. DNS as a part of the Internet

The domain name system, or simply DNS, may not be something you think of everyday. However, DNS is an essential piece of what makes the internet usable. When DNS is working properly, it's enough to type out a domain name into the URL bar in order to open a website, but if it weren't for DNS, we'd have to type in the IP address associated with that website in order to open it.

The different DNS servers today

There are many different implementations of the DNS system today. Each DNS server represents a different implementation of characteristics, such as the interface, platform support, packaging and additional features.

BIND

BIND was designed in the early 1980 at the University of California Berkeley. Written by four students, BIND was and still is continually upgraded and is often considered the standard conventional DNS server. BIND is capable of serving as an authoritative name server as well as a recursor and supports many advanced DNS features such as DNSSEC, TSIG transfers, IPv6 networking. It can be managed via the command line or with a web interface. Even though it is mostly used on Unix-like operating systems, BIND is completely cross-platform today.

PowerDNS

PowerDNS was created in the late 1990s in the Netherlands and quickly became one of the top providers of DNS software and services. The server itself is written in C++ and has a strong community of contributors. PowerDNS is just as full-featured as BIND, but is managed exclusively via a CLI. Many choose to deploy PowerDNS as it is a stable and robust DNS server while also being backed by strong community and commercial support.

Unbound

Initially written in Java in 2006, Unbound was rewritten in C by NLnet Labs as high-performance DNS server software in 2007. The strong points of Unbound are its modular components with modern features. Unbound is a recursive DNS resolver and so is not capable of acting as an authoritative name server, but modules are available for DNSSEC and an integrated client resolver API. Unbound was originally created for Unix-like operating systems, but has since been ported to Windows as well.

Dnsmasq

Dnsmasq was first released in 2001 under the GPL. As free software, Dnsmasq is a part of many Linux distributions today. Dnsmasq is mainly a DNS forwarder and a DHCP server managed via the command line. This software is lightweight and considered especially easy to configure. Dnsmasq is recommended for small networks on all operating systems with the exception of Windows.

Erl-DNS

Erl-DNS is a full-fledged name server written in Erlang. It provides very fast query responses (30-65 µs/response) and can be used as an authoritative name server with several storage techniques for zone data. Erl-DNS lends itself nicely to being extended via Erlang's module system and is also quite fault tolerant due to Erlang's 'let it crash' philosophy.

Choosing a DNS server

At this point, you may feel that you're a bit overwhelmed. In fact, if I were to tell you to go out and start running your own DNS infrastructure using the information I've given here, I wouldn't be doing you any favors. Running your own DNS server is easy, running your own DNS infrastructure that performs well, is stable and resilient is not so easy.

That said, there's good news! You don't have to run your own servers if you've got a great managed DNS provider. Not only can you register or transfer domains, set up services like Google Apps and purchase SSL certificates from the comfort of your domain management page with us, but you'll also have the comfort of knowing that someone who knows how DNS can bite you is running your DNS servers.

QuickSetDNS is a simple tool that allows you to easily change the DNS servers that are used for your Internet connection.You can set the desired DNS servers from the user interface, by choosing from a list of DNS servers that you defined, orfrom command-line, without displaying any user interface.

System Requirements

This utility works on any version of Windows, starting from Windows 2000 and up to Windows 10.Both 32-bit and 64-bit systems are supported.

Start Using QuickSetDNS

QuickSetDNS doesn't require any installation process or additional dll files. In order to start using it,simply run the executable file - QuickSetDNS.exe

After running QuickSetDNS, the main window allows you to easily choose the desired DNS servers to use on your Internet connection, by using the 'Set Active DNS' option (F2).By default, QuickSetDNS provides only one alternative: the public DNS servers of Google - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
You can easily add more DNS servers to the list by using the 'New DNS Server' option (Ctrl+N).

If the 'Automatic DNS' option is selected, then the DNS server information is received from your router automatically, using DHCP.

If you have multiple network adapters, you may need to choose the correct network adapter from the combo-box located just below the toolbar of QuickSetDNS.

Setting DNS servers from command-line

With QuickSetDNS, you can easily set the desired DNS servers from command-line, without displaying any user intertface by using the /SetDNS and /SetDNS6 commands:

Start Using QuickSetDNS

[DNS Servers List] specifies the DNS servers, delimited by comma if there are multiple servers.If empty string is specified ( ' ), QuickSetDNS will set the automatic DNS mode.if 'reg' string is specified , QuickSetDNS will not set the DNS, but it'll update the system with the DNS changes you made in the Registry (Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpiparametersnterfaces[Adapter] ).
[Network Adapter String] specifies the unique ID string of your network adapter or connection name (e.g: 'Wireless Network Connection 2'). If you don't know what is your Network Adapter String, simply press Ctrl+L (Copy SetDNS Command-Line) and the entire command needed to set the selected DNS server will becopied to the clipboard.
If empty string is specified ( ' ), QuickSetDNS will try to choose the correct network adapter automatically.

Here's some examples for the /SetDNS and /SetDNS6 command:

Translating QuickSetDNS to other languages

In order to translate QuickSetDNS to other language, follow the instructions below:
  1. Run QuickSetDNS with /savelangfile parameter:
    QuickSetDNS.exe /savelangfile
    A file named QuickSetDNS_lng.ini will be created in the folder of QuickSetDNS utility.
  2. Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text editor.
  3. Translate all string entries to the desired language.Optionally, you can also add your name and/or a link to your Web site. (TranslatorName and TranslatorURL values) If you add this information, it'll be used in the 'About' window.
  4. After you finish the translation, Run QuickSetDNS, and all translated strings will be loaded from the language file.
    If you want to run QuickSetDNS without the translation, simply rename the language file, or move it to another folder.

This utility is released as freeware. You are allowed to freely distribute this utility via floppy disk, CD-ROM, Internet, or in any other way, as long as you don't charge anything for this and you don'tsell it or distribute it as a part of commercial product. If you distribute this utility, you must include all files inthe distribution package, without any modification !
